One of the most glorious truths in all of Scripture is this: sinners are justified before God, not by their works, but by faith alone in Jesus Christ.
What Is Justification?
Justification is a legal declaration by God. It is not a process of becoming righteous, but a once-for-all act where God declares a sinner righteous in His sight.
“Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus.” – Romans 3:24
To be justified is to be acquitted of all guilt and accepted as righteous – not because of what we have done, but because of what Christ has done.
Why We Cannot Be Justified by Works
The Scriptures are clear: no one can be justified by keeping the law.
“Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight.” – Romans 3:20
“Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ…” – Galatians 2:16
Why? Because the law demands perfect obedience – and we have all sinned.
“For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.” – Romans 3:23
If justification depended on our works, none would be saved.
Justified by Faith Alone
God, in His mercy, has provided another way: justification by faith in Christ.
“Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.” – Romans 5:1
Faith is not a work that earns salvation; it is the empty hand that receives Christ and His righteousness.
“But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness.” – Romans 4:5
The Righteousness of Christ Imputed
The heart of justification is this: the righteousness of Christ is credited to the believer.
“For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.” – 2 Corinthians 5:21
Our sins were laid on Christ, and His righteousness is given to us. This is the great exchange.
A Gift of Grace, Not a Reward
Justification is entirely by grace. It cannot be earned or deserved.
“Therefore it is of faith, that it might be by grace…” – Romans 4:16
“Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us…” – Titus 3:5
And if by grace, then is it no more of works: otherwise grace is no more grace. But if it be of works, then it is no more grace: otherwise work is no more work. – Romans 11:6
The Result: Peace and Assurance
Those who are justified have peace with God and full assurance of salvation.
“There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus.” – Romans 8:1
Justification is not temporary or uncertain. It is a settled verdict from God Himself.
Conclusion
The doctrine of justification by faith humbles the sinner and exalts Christ. It tells us that salvation is not achieved – it is received.
Not by works.
Not by effort.
Not by law.
But by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone.
