God has spoken

Many Christians keep asking God for a private message while neglecting the public Word He has already given.

They want a dream, an impression, a sign, or a voice that will tell them what to do. Meanwhile, the Bible remains unopened, its commands ignored, its warnings softened, and its wisdom treated as though it were not personal enough.

“All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness” (2 Timothy 3:16).

The problem is often not that God has remained silent. The problem is that He has spoken clearly, and we do not like what He said. Scripture tells us to forgive, flee sexual immorality, control the tongue, honour marriage, work honestly, love the church, reject greed, endure suffering, and deny ourselves. A mysterious impression is often preferred because it can be shaped around what we already want.

“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path” (Psalm 119:105).

God may guide through providence, wise counsel, and sanctified judgment, but none of these can replace or contradict His written Word. The Holy Spirit does not lead believers away from the Scripture He inspired.

The Bible was not given merely to decorate a shelf, supply an occasional promise, or support decisions we have already made. It was given to govern the mind, expose the heart, reveal Christ, and bring the whole life beneath the authority of God.

“But prove yourselves doers of the word, and not merely hearers who delude themselves” (James 1:22).

Before asking God to say something new, we should ask whether we are obeying what He has already said. A neglected Bible and a hunger for private revelation do not reveal spiritual depth. They often reveal that novelty is more attractive to us than obedience.
