A person’s deepest desires reveal more about him than his public words. We may speak about God, doctrine, ministry, and holiness, but what continually burdens the heart exposes what we truly treasure.
“For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also” (Matthew 6:21).
One man grieves because his reputation has been wounded. Another grieves because he has dishonoured Christ. One longs for comfort, recognition, and success. Another longs to know God, overcome sin, and walk in a manner worthy of the gospel. Their inward hunger reveals the direction of their lives.
“As the deer pants for the water brooks, so my soul pants for You, O God” (Psalm 42:1).
This does not mean true believers never desire earthly comfort or never struggle with corrupt desires. Remaining sin still fights within us. But grace creates a new ache. The Christian is no longer satisfied merely because his circumstances improve. He longs to be free from the sin that still clings to him and to see Christ without obstruction.
“Even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting eagerly for our adoption as sons, the redemption of our body” (Romans 8:23).
A hypocrite may groan over the consequences of sin while still loving the sin itself. A regenerate heart groans because sin offends the God it has come to love. It does not merely want relief from guilt. It wants cleansing, obedience, and fellowship with Christ.
“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied” (Matthew 5:6).
Do not judge your spiritual condition only by what you profess when others are listening. Ask what you desire when no one sees you. What loss troubles you most? What absence makes the heart restless? What would satisfy you if God placed it within your reach?
The direction of the soul is revealed by what it continually longs to possess. Where grace is truly at work, the deepest cry will increasingly become: more holiness, less sin, more of Christ, and less of self.
